The North Greenville Crusaders wrapped up the regular season with an 8-2 victory over the Wingate University Bulldogs in Wingate, North Carolina. Scoring was a bit of a struggle as the two teams were a combined 3-20 with runners in scoring position, but the Crusaders were able to produce six extra base hits to drive in eight total runs. Matthew Dailey was credited as the winning pitcher.
Innings 1-3 (4-0 NGU)
Jeremy Whitehead began the game with a leadoff single, but two fielder's choices followed by a strikeout prevented a run from scoring early on. Starter Michael Giacone got off to a slow start with two walks and two wild pitches in the bottom of the 1st, but recovered with a strikeout to end the threat. Jared Williams put NGU on the board with a solo home run to left field in the top of the 2nd. After a double by Dawson Price, Josh Senter connected for an RBI double to give North Greenville an early 2-0 lead. Wingate fought back in the bottom of the inning with a walk followed by a base hit. However, Giacone retired the next three batters to keep the Bulldogs off the board. With two outs and a runner at first, Lex Tuten doubled the Crusader lead with a two run home run to right field. Matthew Dailey relieved Giacone in the bottom of the inning, giving up a leadoff walk but then retiring the next three batters.
Innings 4-6 (6-2 NGU)
After the Crusaders went down in order in the top of the 4th, WU cut the Crusader lead in half with a sacrifice fly followed by an error that allowed a second run to score. NGU went three up, three down once again in the top of the 5th, but Daniel Kight kept Wingate off the board as well in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded in the top of the 6th, Jack Morris connected with an RBI double center field to put North Greenville back up by four runs. Ryan Kirk gave up a walk to begin the bottom of the inning, but would then retire the next three batters.
Innings 7-9 (8-2 NGU)
NGU loaded the bases in the top of the 7th before taking advantage of a fielding error that allowed two runs to score. Again, the Bulldogs drew a walk to begin the bottom of the inning, but were otherwise held in check. After a quiet top of the 8th, WU recorded two base hits in the inning, but Grayson Hickert was able to retire the final two batters of the inning to keep the Crusaders lead at six runs. Both teams went three up, three down in the 9th inning. Jared Lembcke closed out the game for NGU.
Lex Tuten had a solid day, going 3 for 5 with a home run, a double, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored.
Adam Sasser recorded 2 hits and scored 3 runs.
Jack Morris put up a double and 2 RBIs.
North Greenville will return to action next week in the Southeast Regional Tournament, which will begin Thursday, May 16th.
