Tigerville – North Greenville Baseball locked up a spot in the Conference Carolinas championship series, upending three seed Mount Olive 13-8.
Mount Olive put up the first run of the game, capitalizing on a leadoff double from Gunner Tolston. Tolston would come around to score on a base knock from JT Snow. Snow advanced to third on the next at bat from UMO but NGU starter Ethan Garner was able to limit the damage, retiring the next three Trojans with a strikeout, pop-up ground out.
North Greenville was two runs better than the Trojans in the first frame. A leadoff walk for Jeremy Whitehead set the tone for a three-run first as he was followed by Utah Jones who also drew a free pass. John Michael Faile would come up big per the usual, singling to Right field, bringing around Whitehead and sending Jones to third.
Jones would later score on a wild pitch while Faile would advance and score a batter later on a sac fly from Jeff Chandler to make it 3-1. UMO would cut it 3-2 in the second inning but three more runs would come across in the second frame to extend NGU’s lead to 6-2. Jeremy Whitehead and Utah Jones would add RBI in the inning to go along with an unearned run.
A scoreless third inning and a one-run fourth from Mount Olive cut North Greenville’s lead in half after four full frames but NGU’s bats were kickstarted again in the fifth. The Crusaders added their third three-run inning of the day, using a trio of RBI singles to do the damage. Chandler and Josh Senter would account for two of the runs while Lex Tuten also came around.
A pair of runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings would make it 13-5 after a two-run seventh for the Trojans. Mount Olive delivered three more runs in the ninth inning with a three-run homer but Brent Herlong buckled down and retired the final two batters to send Mount Olive to the Saturday night elimination round.
North Greenville delivered 13-hits to score 13-runs in the winning effort. Jeff Chandler led the hit parade with three base knocks in four plate appearances. He scored twice and had an RBI.
Utah Jones finished 2-4 with a game-high three runs scored and two RBI while John Michael Faile was 2-3 with a run and a pair of runs batted in.
Jared Lembcke was credited with the win after throwing four innings, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out three.
