The North Greenville Crusaders continue to roll by winning both games of the doubleheader and completing the sweep with final scores of 8-2 and 6-2 in Bristol, Tennessee. With the weekend wrapped up, the Crusaders now hold a conference record of 18-3 and need to win just one more conference game to clinch the regular season championship. Jared Williams stole the show with five hits including two doubles and three RBIs.
Game One (8-2 NGU)
With Michael Giacone making the start for NGU, both teams would go three up, three down in the 1st inning to begin the day. The Crusaders came up with the first baserunner in the top of the 2nd when Jeffrey Chandler drew a walk. However, King would strike first with an RBI single to left field. NGU threatened in the top of the 3rd with singles by Jack Morris, Jeremy Whitehead, and Jared Williams, but a double play would put an end to the threat. The Tornado recorded a double and a walk in the bottom of the inning, but Giacone retired the next two batters to end the inning. KU added a second run in the bottom of the 4th with a solo home run. North Greenville was able to get on the board in the top of the 5th with an RBI double by Morris and would also tie the game when Williams hit an RBI single up the middle. A huge top of the 6th allowed the Crusaders to put the game away with six runs scored including a two RBI single to center field by Josh Senter, an RBI single by Morris, an RBI single by Utah Jones, and two RBI single to right field by Adam Sasser. The Tornado went three up, three down in the 6th and 7th innings to allow the Crusaders to clinch the series.
Game Two (6-2 NGU)
Tucker Burgess took the mound for the start. Both starters pitched three up, three down 1st and 2nd innings. Once again, King would get on the board first in the 3rd with a an RBI single. However, North Greenville responded quickly by scoring two in the top of the 4th including a sacrifice fly by Jeffrey Chandler. The Tornado evened things up in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single. On a squeeze play, Jared Williams drove in a run with an RBI bunt single in the top of the 5th to give NGU the lead back. In the top of the 7th, the Crusaders added two runs to their lead by way of a failed pickoff attempt that allowed Lex Tuten to score and an RBI single to left field by Jared Williams. A final run for North Greenville came in the top of the 8th when John Michael Faile hit an RBI single to left field. Grayson Hickert pitched the final inning, ending the game with a 1-2-3 inning.
Jared Williams had quite a day with 5 hits, 2 doubles, and 3 RBIs.
Jack Morris also had an impressive day, collecting 4 hits, 4 runs scored, and 2 RBIs.
Utah Jones recorded 2 hits, 2 runs scored, and an RBI.
The Crusaders will head to Pembroke, North Carolina to face the UNC Pembroke Braves on Tuesday, April 9th.
