Tigerville, SC - The North Greenville Crusaders completed the sweep of the Newberry Wolves in a doubleheader, winning Game One 7-5 and Game Two 13-5. With the sweep, the Crusaders improved their record to 4-2. Jeremy Whitehead and Jeffrey Chandler both collected five hits in the doubleheader. Kipp Rollings and Michael Giacone were credited with the wins.
Innings 1-3 (2-2 Tied)
Newberry began the game with a successful 1st inning, scoring two runs on back to back RBI doubles. Jeremy Whitehead hit a leadoff single for the Crusaders, but went three up, three down afterwards. The Wolves led the 2nd inning with a leadoff single, but the next three batters were retired. North Greenville tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning thanks to a solo home run to left center by Adam Sasser and a sacrifice fly by Jack Morris. In a quick 3rd inning, both teams would go three up, three down.
Innings 4-6 (5-4 NGU)
After two singles put runners on, a fielding error allowed a run to score to give Newberry the lead back in the top of the 4th. However, NGU responded in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run by Sean Parsons and an RBI double by Whitehead. The Wolves added a run in the top fo the 5th by way of an RBI double to left field. NGU was able to get two runners on base, but the runners would be stranded to keep the score at 5-4 infavor of the Crusaders. In the top of the 6th, Tucker Burgess was replaced by Kipp Rollings. NBY recorded one hit in the top of the 6th but would not score a run. North Greenville went quiet in the bottom of the order with a three up, three down inning.
Inning 7 (7-5 NGU)
Rollings opened up the inning with a leadoff walk. After the runner advanced to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a balk, an RBI single tied the game at 5-5. After a two out walk by Sasser, Jeffrey Chandler ended the game with a rwo-RBI home run to center field for the walk off.
Innings 1-3 (5-0 NGU)
Starting pitcher Michael Giacone pitched a 1-2-3 inning to begin the game. The bottom of the inning was a big one for the Crusaders as five runs would score, including a two-RBI double by Elvin Rosa. The Wolves would again go three up, three down in the 2nd inning. NGU made some noise in the 2nd with two singles and a walk, but left the bases loaded. In the 3rd inning, both teams would record one hit and would both leave their runner on base.
Innings 4-6 (10-2 NGU)
After Newberry went three up, three down in the top of the 4th, NGU put two more runs up on the board when Utah Jones scored on a bases loaded walk and John Michael Faile scored on a wild pitch. NBY did get on the board in the 5th with a two run home run down the left field line. In the top of the 6th, the Wolves went quiet with just a hit and a runner left on base. The Crusaders on the other hand scored three in the bottom of the inning when Sasser hit a solo home run, a wild pitch allowed Jared Williams to score, and Whitehead singled up the middle to bring in Faile.
Innings 7-9 (13-5 NGU)
With Dany Westbury the new pitcher for North Greenvile, a sacrifice fly brought in a run for Newberry in the 7th. However, North Greenville added a run of its own when Sasser hit his second consecutive home run. With Jared Lembcke as the new pitcher for the Crusdaers, NBY added two runs in the 8th with an RBI groundout and a sacrificy fly. The Crusaders scored two of their own in the 8th thanks to a solo home run by Treyce Bouknight as well as an RBI single. To close out the game, Newberry went three up, three down in the top of the 9th with Grayson Hickert closing out the game for NGU.
Jeremy Whitehead continues to hit well, recording 5 hits throughout the day.
Jeffrey Chandler also posted five hits.
Michael Giacone had a solid start, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing just 2 runs on 4 hits.
NGU will return to action on Tuesday, February 12th to take on the Anderson Trojans in Tigerville.
