Tigerville, SC - North Greenville evened up its W-L record at 2-2 with a 5-2 win over the Wolves of Newberry College. After scoring just one run in the first five innings, the Crusaders put up four runs in the final four innings. Jeremy Whitehead continued his hot start to the season with a three-hit performance. Ethan Garner recorded his second win of the young season.
Newberry left one runner on base in the 1st inning, who walked on a ten-pitch plate appearance. In the bottom of the inning, the Crusaders began things by getting two runner on base due to a walk and a fielding error. With a runner on third, Adam Sasser came through with a sacrifice fly to score Jeremy Whitehead and put NGU on the board. The Wolves went three up, three down in the top of the 2nd in an unusual way. After a leadoff walk, a single that resulted in a runner interference followed by a double play retired the side. North Greenville would load the bases in the bottom of the inning with all three runner hit by a pitch. However, no runners would score. Newberry would get one on base in the 3rd on a walk, but would otherwise go quiet. After a single and a catcher's interference, Elvin Rosa hit a single to center field. John Michael Faile tried to score from second on the play, but was tagged at home with several steps to spare to keep the score 1-0 in favor of the Crusaders.
In the top of the 4th, Ethan Garner pitched a 1-2-3 inning for North Greenville. Whitehead recorded the only hit of the inning for NGU, but would be caught stealing in the next at bat. NBY led off the top of the 5th by reaching on a fielding error. The runner advanced to second on a groundout, but would be caught stealing at third later in the inning. NGU would go three up, three down in the bottom of the inning. With Ethan Garner entering the game to pitch, Newberry would put the tying run on the board in the top of the 6th with an RBI single. However, the Crusaders responded in the bottom of the inning by putting up two runs. With two runners on base, Josh Senter doubled to center field to bring in Faile. Jared Williams would also score on the play due to a throwing error to make the score 3-1 with NGU leading.
The Wolves added a run in the top of the 7th by way of an RBI groundout. NGU responded in the bottom of the inning with three straight singles including an RBI by Elvin Rosa to score Faile. Newberry recorded a double in the top of the 8th, but would otherwise go quiet in the inning. Whitehead continued to hit well with a leadoff triple down the right field line to begin the bottom of the inning. He would come in to score when Michael Neustifter hit an RBI groundout to third base, making the score 5-2. North Greenville began the 9th by hitting a batter, but a double play followed by a strikeout would end the game.
Jeremy Whitehead posted another solid performance at the plate with 3 hits in 4 at bats including a triple. He came around to score twice.
John Michael Faile also went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored.
Ryan Kirk had a strong outing as the starting pitcher, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing 0 runs and just 1 hit.
The three-game series will continue tomorrow in Tigerville starting at noon.
