NGU Splits Doubleheader With Belmont Abbey to Take Series

Belmont, N.C. - North Greenville took Game 1 of the doubleheader to officially take the conference series against the Belmont Abbey Crusaders with a final score of 9-5. Game 2 was highly competitive until the 8th inning when the game slipped away from NGU. Connor Grant had quite a day with six hits and three RBIs. Ethan Garner received his third win of the season while Kipp Rollings earned his first save.

Game 1

The Basics

  • Score: NGU – 9 / Belmont Abbey – 5
  • Records: NGU 14-3, 5-0 CC / BAC 16-4, 6-2 CC
  • Location: Belmont, North Carolina (Abbey Yard)

How it Happened

  • Pitching dominated the first three innings. BAC had only three batters reach base while NGU had none.
  • North Greenville struck in the top of the 4th with four runs. With the bases loaded, Connor Grant scored Josh Black with a fielder's choice to put NGU on the board. Then Jeffrey Chandler hit his third home run of the season to score three and give North Greenville a 4-0 lead.
  • Belmont Abbey quickly struck back in the bottom of the inning with three home runs that resulted in five runs.
  • It didn't take long for NGU to respond. In the top of the 5th, a 2-RBI double by Connor Grant and an RBI-Single by Alex Williams put North Greenville back ahead 7-5.
  • Kipp Rollings came in to pitch at the bottom of the 7th in relief of Ethan Garner. Rollings would allow just one hit, three walks, and no runs in his three innings of relief.
  • NGU added two insurance runs in the 7th. An RBI-double by Chandler and an RBI-single by Jack Morris gave North Greenville a 9-5 lead, which would end up being the final score.

How it Happened

  • For the second straight game, the first three innings went scoreless.
  • North Greenville once again struck in the 4th with three runs. Jeffrey Chandler drove in the first run with an RBI-single up the middle. After a walk by Sean Parsons and a double by Jack Morris, Jared Williams singled through the right side to score Parsons. Later in the inning, Utah Jones walked, driving in Morris and putting NGU up 3-0.
  • Belmont Abbey scored to get on the board in the bottom of the 4th inning with an RBI-groundout.
  • BAC added a run in the 5th when a fielding error allowed a run to score.
  • A two-run home run in the 6th gave Belmont Abbey its first lead of the game with a score of 4-3.
  • North Greenville quickly tied the game in the 7th with an RBI-double by Chandler that scored Connor Grant.
  • With a tied game heading to the bottom of the 8th, the game quickly drifted away from North Greenville. Four hits, four walks, and a hit batter in the inning allowed BAC to take a 12-4 lead, which would become the final score.
