Mount Olive, NC - North Greenville's offense was limited once again thanks to dominant starting pitching by the conference-leading Mount Olive Trojans. NGU was limited to five hits in the first game of today's doubleheader and seven hits in the second game, and was 1-18 with runners in scoring position for the day.
Game one saw Canaan Cropper start his ninth game of the season. He pitched a complete game and only allowed four hits while striking out four, but ultimately was charged with the loss. Austin Hutchison was given the start for Mount Olive. He pitched a complete game and allowed five hits and no runs while striking out seven. He earned his eighth win of the season and holds a perfect record.
The only run of the game came in the seventh inning when UMO's Drew Ellis singled through the left side to score the winning run.
The Crusaders showed some signs of life in Game 2, but a late-game surge by Mount Olive secured the sweep. Blake Hamilton started the game for NGU. He pitched five innings allowing two earned runs off of five hits and striking out eight. Brighton Hudson was given the start for the Trojans. Hudson pitched 7.2 innings and allowed three earned runs while striking out four.
North Greenville struck first in the second inning with an RBI single up the middle by Andrew Plunkett.
In the sixth inning, NGU added another run when Clark Scolamiero homered to right field. Mount Olive would respond in the bottom of the inning with Ellis scoring on a wild pitch and two more runs scoring off of a sacrifice fly and an error.
UMO added two more runs in the seventh when Jose Lopez doubled to left field.
NGU scored a run of their own in the top of the eighth with an RBI double by Ryan Brown. The trojans responded in the bottom of the inning when two errors allowed two additional runs to score to bring what would end up the final score to 7-3 in favor of Mount Olive.
North Greenville falls to 22-11 overall and 9-6 in conference play while Mount Olive improves to 28-5 overall and a perfect 15-0 in conference play. NGU will travel to Montreat, NC Wednesday to face the Montreat Cavaliers.
