Florence, SC - In its second trip to Florence this season, the North Greenville Crusaders were able to get redemption on the Francis Marion Patriots after losing in walk-off fashion earlier in the season. Five NGU batters scored multiple hits in the game. Although the pitching staff allowed eight runs, only four of them were earned. Kyle Kadlub earned his second win of the season while FMU pitcher Christian Umphlett was charged with his first loss.
Zack Kamerman and Arien Seymour were the starters for the game. Both received no-decisions.
The Crusaders began the scoring in the first. Both Andrew Plunkett and Ryan Brown scored a run with a sacrifice fly to put NGU up 2-0 heading to the bottom of the inning. Francis Marion responded in the bottom of the inning with a Logan Koch RBI single down the right field line.
Both teams would score runs in the second inning as well. In the top of the inning, Connor Grant connected with a 2-RBI double to right field. Grant himself would score on the same play thanks to an error to bring the score to 5-1. The Patriots responded in a big way with a grand slam by William Robbins to even up the score at 5.
The score would not remain tied for long as a Clark Scolamiero walk with the bases loaded brought in a run to give NGU the lead back in the third.
After a three up, three down inning for both teams in the fourth, a Wheeler Smith RBI double to center field increased the Crusader lead to 2 runs.
The Patriots were able to string together a run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly by Zach Paquette to bring the score to 7-6 in favor of NGU.
The top of the eighth would allow North Greenville to put the game away for good. After a leadoff triple by Smith, Scolamiero drove him in with an RBI double. Scolamiero scored later in the inning due to a wild pitch. With Nathaniel Maggio at third, an infield RBI single by Josh Black increased the Crusader lead to 4 runs. Another wild pitch would allow Andrew Plunkett to score in the inning to make the score 11-6.
With Scolamiero moved to pitcher, FMU would put up one last fight in the ninth. An RBI groundout by Spitzmiller would score a run. A wild pitch allowed a second run to score in the inning, but a strikeout ended the game with a final score of 11-8 to give North Greenville its 21st win of the season and a quality win against the nationally ranked Francis Marion Patriots.
Other North Greenville pitchers to make appearances in the game included Sam Pruitt, Blake Hamilton, and Canaan Cropper.
Up next for the Crusaders is a short trip to Gaffney to face Conference Carolinas opponent, the Limestone Saints. Friday's first pitch is set for 3:30 PM.
