After being upset in the first conference game of the season, the North Greenville Crusaders overpowered the Southern Wesleyan Warriors in day two of the series. The Crusaders scored 34 runs, produced 28 hits, and allowed just one run in games two and three of the series. With the wind blowing in for the majority of the day, home runs were not a large factor in either game, but the Crusaders had no problem producing runs in other ways, including 14 extra base hits and a team batting average of .487 with runners in scoring position.
Game 1 saw Southern Wesleyan starting pitcher JJ Julian and North Greenville starting pitcher Tucker Burgess take the mound.
North Greenville went straight to work in the bottom of the first with a 2-RBI double by Andrew Frazier. Frazier also later stole home in the inning to score the third run of the game.
The bottom of the second was a productive one for the Crusaders as well, including RBI doubles by Josh Black, Andrew Frazier, and Daniel Myers as well as a 2-RBI single by Brandon Odachowski.
Another run would be added to the Crusader lead in the third inning with a passed ball that allowed Clark Scolamiero to score.
Southern Wesleyan would get on the board with a home run to right field by Trevor Walker.
Andrew Meadows responded with a home run of his own in the sixth to bring what would be the final score to 12-1. Burgess received the win while Julian was charged with the loss. Shane Bishop and Avery Greer both chewed up an inning for the Crusaders. Neither reliever allowed a hit or run.
Game 2 starters were Blake Hamilton for North Greenville and Josh Antwine for Southern Wesleyan.
The first three innings were rather quiet for both teams.
A scoreless game going into the fourth inning, Nathaniel Maggio would score the first run of the game with a home run to right center. The inning would see six additional runs score, including a 2-RBI triple by Wheeler Smith and an RBI double by Daniel Myers.
A sacrifice fly in the fifth by Ryan Brown would make the score 8-0 in favor of North Greenville.
The sixth inning would prove to be the most effective of the day for the Crusaders. North Greenville played small ball in the inning. Maggio hit the only extra base hit of the inning, a 2-RBI double to right center. Through singles, wild pitches, and advancing on errors, eight runs would score in the inning.
Six additional runs would score in the seventh, including a 2-RBI double by Jackson Muldowney and an RBI double by Maggio.
Pitching took over in the eighth and ninth innings, completing the shutout. Blake Hamilton received his first win of the season while Josh Antwine was charged with the loss. Four Crusader pitchers made one inning appearances in the game including Sal Lovaglio, Kyle Kadlub, Sam Pruitt, and Connor Grant.
The Crusaders will spend a couple of midweek games away from Tigerville. On Tuesday, North Greenville travels to North Carolina to face the Mars Hill Lions. That game is scheduled for a 3:00 PM start time.
