North Greenville clinched a series win against the Lander Bearcats for the first time in school history Friday night in Greenwood. The thirteenth series between the two schools, North Greenville's offensive showing proved to be enough to take down the Bearcats.
It didn't take long for the North Greenville offense to get on the board. With a runner on third in the top of the first inning, Connor Grant hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in the first run of the game. The next at-bat, Nathaniel Maggio would show off his power, crushing a home run to center field to bring in two more runs.
The Crusaders would add a run in the second inning. After a single by Bennette Hill and two wild pitches which allowed Hill to reach third base, a ground ball by Ryan Brown allowed Hill to cross home plate.
Nathaniel Maggio's next at-bat would have the same result as his first at-bat, hitting his second two-run home run of the game to increase the North Greenville lead to 6-0.
In the top of the fifth, North Greenville was able to score yet another unanswered run. After a triple by Connor Grant, Andrew Plunkett's single to right field brought the run in to make the score 7-0.Lander would strike big in the bottom of the fifth inning with four runs, including a two-run home run by Bailey Connell.
It didn't take North Greenville long to respond as the top of the sixth inning would add another run fo rthe Crusaders thanks to a Connor Grant RBI double. The Bearcats were able to score in the sixth inning as well to bring the score to 8-6.
The Crusaders were finally able to pull away for good in the top of the seventh with an RBI groundout by Andrew Frazier and a two-RBI single by Clark Scolamiero.
One final run would be scored by the Crusaders in the top of the ninth. With Bennette Hill at third base, a wild pitch allowed Hill to cross home plate to bring the score to 12-6. Although Lander was able to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth, no runs were scored.
Canaan Cropper received the win for North Greenville while Sam Linn was charged with the loss for Lander. North Greenville will go for the sweep tomorrow in Lexington. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
