Lexington, S.C. – North Greenville added an NCAA Division I opponent to its casualties list on Tuesday night with a 6-2 win over Charleston Southern University.
Eric Gilbert and Bennette Hill had two hits each for the Crusaders. Gilbert was 2-3 with two runs scored while Hill finished 2-4 with an RBI and a run score. David Houser led all players with three RBI. Nathaniel Maggio also had an RBI for NGU.
The Crusaders jumped on the Bucs in the third inning with a four run outburst. Maggio would plate a run with a bases loaded sacrifice fly while David Houser would provide more fireworks with a three run homer that scored Hill and Gilbert.
Charleston Southern would answer with a pair of runs in the home half of the third as four hits would lead to two runs, cutting NGU’s lead in half. The Bucs would also get some assistance from an NGU error but stranded two runners in the process.
Bennette Hill would come through for the Crusaders in the fourth with an RBI single to add a run back to NGU’s lead. The Crusaders would add another insurance run in the eighth inning as Gilbert would come around to score on a fielding error after reaching base on a third strike passed ball.
The Bucs would get two free passes in the 8th inning but leave the runners on base as Daniel Knight worked around the jam. John Leopard would put the finishing touches on the non-conference win with a hitless ninth inning, registering a strikeout in his only inning of work. Blake Hamilton would get the win for the Crusaders, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings of work.
North Greenville, now 34-12 on the season will travel to Due West, South Carolina on Friday to open a three-game set with the Erskine Flying Fleet.
