Central, S.C. - North Greenville held steady at the top of the Conference Carolinas race on Saturday completing the sweep of Southern Wesleyan with wins of 18-3 and 14-6.
Nathaniel Maggio put North Greenville up early in the first inning with a three run homer. The first inning dinger was Maggio's sixth of the season and set the tone for NGU's game out offensive outburst.
Maggio would also plate the first run of NGU's seven run third inning with a single that platted David Houser. Foley George would single home Maggio to give NGU a 5-0 lead. Bennette Hill would deliver the big blow in the frame as he delivered NGU's second three-run homer of the game. Hill's homer scored Josh Black and Andrew Frazier and gave the Crusaders a 10-0 lead.
The Crusaders would deliver more damage in the fourth and fifth innings with four more runs. Jessep Polk delivered a two-run shot to left field while Josh Black's RBI single scored Andrew Frazier in the fourth. Maggio delivered in the fifth inning with an RBI double to extend NGU's lead to 14-1.
Four more runs in the seventh inning would tie North Greenville's season high for runs in a game. Ethan Garner earned the game one win after five innings of work. Garner allowed one run on four hits and struck out three.
Nathaniel Maggio finished the game 3-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. Bennette Hill had three RBI and was 1-4 while Jessep Polk and Josh Black had two RBI each.
David Houser would lead NGU in game two as he was 2-2 with three RBI. Houser was also given four free passes by SWU pitching. Mitchell Painter was 2-4 with four RBI while Foley George finished 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Southern Wesleyan struck first in game two as they platted four runs on two hits. The inning stalled though as the Warriors failed to capitalize on a bases loaded situation, stranding three runners.
Foley George would leadoff the second inning with a single to set the table for NGU's biggest inning of the day. George would come around to score three batters later as Mitchel Painter's single scored him and Jessep Polk to cut the SWU lead in half. Painter would come up big later in the inning with a single that scored two more runs as NGU stormed out to a 9-4 lead.
David Houser's eighth home run of the season and fifth of this week highlighted the NGU third as Bennette Hill came around to score to make the score 11-4 in favor of the Crusaders. Hill led off the inning with a walk. The Warriors would also plate two in the home half of the inning to drop the lead back to single digits.
The bats went quiet until the eighth inning when NGU broke the silence. Nathaniel Maggio's double scored David Houser while Shaquille Rolle would score on a Lipscomb single. NGU also got a run on a Southern Wesleyan error.
Matt Laurens is credited with the game two win after pitching 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. North Greenville improved to 13-6 on the year and 6-0 in league play. The Crusaders will travel to Anderson on Monday afternoon for a 4pm first pitch with the Trojans.
