Nathaniel Maggio continues his hot hitting this season with two homeruns, while six pitchers combined for a shutout as North Greenville topped Montreat College, 9-0.
Maggio's first home run of the day came in the fourth inning and opened the scoring in the game. After David Houser's single opened the inning, Maggio blasted a ball over the right field fence to make the early score 2-0.
The Crusaders held Montreat scoreless in the top of the fifth before tacking another run onto the lead. This time, the Crusader offense would manufacture the run, beginning with a base hit from Eric Gilbert. Andrew Frazier followed with a single of his own, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch during the next at-bat. Houser earned a walk and Tony Davila brought in the game's third run with a sacrifice fly. Frazier would be thrown out at home to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Maggio got another chance to step up to the plate and he used it to hit his second home run of the game, this time a solo shot to right. Later in the inning, Mitchell Painter singled to left field and advanced to second base on a Montreat error. Brandon Odichowsk's single would bring in the fifth Crusader run. North Greenville would add four more runs in the seventh inning, including a Houser two-run homerun that would put the game out of reach for the Crusaders.
Maggio finished the day 3-for-4, including his two homeruns while Houser finished 2-for-3 with a homerun and a walk. Six Crusader pitchers combined to shut out Montreat, allowing only five hits total on the afternoon. Kyle Kablub picked up his first win of the season in three innings of work.
The Crusaders return to action tomorrow, March 2, where they will face the Brevard College Tornados. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. in Brevard, N.C.
