Tigerville, S.C. - North Greenville locked up its first series win of the season, splitting a Saturday double-header with Salem International. The Crusaders bounced back from a 2-0 game one loss with a thrilling 10-8 game two win.
The Crusaders mustered just two base hits in game one as SIU starter Dolan Kunkel threw a complete seven inning performance, striking out two and allowing one free pass.
The only runs of the game came in the third inning when the Tigers plated two on four hits. The Crusaders escaped further damage as SIU stranded two runners in scoring position.
North Greenville stranded runners in the third inning and seventh inning as the Tigers evened the series at 1-1. Drew Lipscomb and Andrew Frazier delivered North Greenville's only two hits.
The Crusaders bounced back in a big way, led by the bat of Jae Roberts. Roberts wrapped up Saturday with a 4-4 performance, including three home runs, six RBI, and three runs scored.
Roberts doubled NGU's game one run total by himself with two solo homeruns in his first two at-bats to give the Crusaders a 2-0 lead.
A three run fourth inning put the Tigers up 3-2, but a six run home half of the inning would earn the Crusaders the lead once again. Nathaniel Maggio and Jae Roberts would blasts homers for the Crusaders while Bennette Hill's bases loaded walk would also account for a run. Robert's third blast of the day was a grand slam, which gave the Crusaders an 7-3 advantage.
The Tigers continued to hang around, delivering a four run fifth to pull to within one of North Greenville. SIU scored four runs on three hits, but stranded two.
The Crusaders would tack on two insurance runs in the seventh inning, using the long ball once again. Nathaniel Maggio's second homerun of the game would extend the lead to 9-7 while Foley George's solo blast from the six hole would give NGU its 10th run of the game.
Blake Hamilton would get the game two win after four innings of work. Hamilton gave up seven runs on three hits. John Leopard would earn his second save of the season as he closed out the Tigers in the ninth.
Maggio would finish game two, 2-5 with two's across the board, scoring twice while delivering two RBI. David Houser was 2-4 with a run scored while Foley George finished 1-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
North Greenville will be back in action on February 23rd against Mars Hill University. First pitch between the Crusaders and Lions is scheduled for 3pm.
