Tigerville, S.C. - Two runs late in the game doomed North Greenville on Thursday as the Lander Bearcats earned a 2-0 win over the Crusaders on opening day in Tigerville.
The Crusaders had chances early but couldn't find the offense in key situations, stranding two runners in each of the first three innings. NGU starter Hunter Dilworth kept the Bearcats in check, allowing just one hit in through four innings of play. Dilworth allowed one run on two hits through five innings of work.
The Bearcats broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning as a bases loaded walk made the score 1-0. The Crusaders would escape further damage, as Dilworth was able to work around any further damage, stranding three LU runners. The Crusaders would strand one more runner in the sixth inning before Lander would add an insurance run in the seventh with a solo home run.
North Greenville would go down in order in the 8th and 9th innings as the Crusaders fell to 0-1 on the season. Jae Roberts and Drew Lipscomb led NGU's offense with two hits each, while Foley George and Taylor McCuen registered their first base knocks of the season.
The Crusaders will travel to Greenwood, South Carolina tomorrow afternoon to take on Lander in the second game of a three game set. Tomorrow's first pitch at Lander is scheduled for 5pm.
