Tigerville, S.C—The Crusaders took advantage of some Warrior miscues late in Friday's series opener and held off a last inning SWU rally en route to a 3-2 win at Ashmore Field.
North Greenville scored a run in the second and one in the fifth inning to take a two run lead over the visiting Warriors. Wheeler Smith and Drew Lipscomb delivered RBI singles for the Crusaders while NGU starter Ryan Dittmar held the SWU bats to just four hits through five innings.
Southern Wesleyan was finally able to string together some hits in the sixth inning. A single and two walks would load the bases while a single from Johnny Ponder would score two runs to even the tally at 2-2. The inning would end after a strike out and ground out, leaving two runners on for SWU.
North Greenville would regain the edge in the home half of the sixth as the Crusaders were the beneficiaries of some shaky Southern Wesleyan defense. Taylor McCuen's leadoff double would set the table for the Shaq Rolle who's ground ball forced a bad throw from the SWU third baseman as McCuen came all the way from second to score on the errant throw.
John Leopard would protect NGU's one run lead with two shutout innings while Adam Bohosian earned his seventh save of the season for the Crusaders who improved to 9-7 in league play. Cuyler McAuliffe would earn the win for NGU while Dittmar would get the no-decision after pitching five scoreless innings.
The Crusaders rolled up 10 hits in the Friday win, led by Tony Davila who was 3-4 with a run scored. Taylor McCuen and Allen Staton had two hits each while Rolle and Wheeler Smith had one hit each and an RBI. Drew Lipscomb also had a hit and an RBI.
North Greenville will look for a series sweep tomorrow afternoon with a double-header starting at 12pm.
