Tigerville, S.C.—The Crusaders pounded out ten hits and used two Newberry errors to earn an 8-5 win over the Wolves, Monday afternoon at Ashmore Field.
Allen Staton had four RBI for North Greenville to lead all hitters while finishing 2-3. Staton smashed his team leading fourth homerun in the second to give NGU a 5-1 lead. The three run jack scored Josh Black and Shaquille Rolle as North Greenville plated five in the frame.
Rolle also put together one of his best performances of the season at the dish, pounding out two hits on four appearances with three RBI's and a run scored. Rolle rolled a two RBI single between third and short in the third inning, extending NGU's lead to 7-5 after Newberry cut the advantage to 5-4 in the top of the of the inning.
The offenses would go silent after scoring 11 combined runs in the first three frames. North Greenville would scratch across one more in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 8-4 as Staton looped a single into center field to score Wheeler Smith. Newberry would scratch one more run in the eighth to cut the deficit to three but NGU pitching worked around a bases loaded jam to limit the damage.
Newberry would go silently in the ninth as the Crusaders improved their overall record to 11-11 on the season. Michael Bonifay was credited with the win for NGU while Adam Boghosian took the save. The Crusaders will continue their spring break stretch of games on March 11th as Carson Newman comes to Tigerville for a non-conference 3pm first pitch.
