Tigerville, SC – In the final game of the 2014 season, the North Greenville Crusaders earned a 2-1 victory over the Lions of Emmanuel College on Monday night.
The Crusaders and Lion were locked in a pitching duel through the first five innings of play with neither team able to bring a run across the plate.
However, in the bottom of the 6th inning, junior Allen Staton crushed a solo home run over the left field fence, his 4th of the season, to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
Senior Taylor Hollifield, playing in his final game as a Crusader, brought across the second run of the game for North Greenville with a sacrifice fly in the 7th inning for a 2-0 lead.
Emmanuel was able to draw a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 9th for the Lions’ first run of the game but the Crusaders shut the door to earn the one-run victory.
Senior right-hander Ryan Woodring ended his career on a high note, pitching a complete game allowing just one run on seven hits with a career-high 13 strikeouts.
Staton led the Crusaders going 1-for-3 with a home run, a run scored and an RBI, while freshman Matt Cooper, sophomore Foley George and junior Josh Sealey each finished 1-for-3 at the plate. Freshman Colton Grant reached base three times in the game, going 1-for-1 at the plate with drawing two walks and recording two stolen bases.
The Crusaders finish the 2014 season with an 8-35 overall record and a 2-18 record in Conference Carolinas play.
