Due West, SC – The Crusader baseball team dropped a 10-4 decision to the Flying Fleet of Erskine College in Conference Carolinas’ action on Friday afternoon.
North Greenville jumped out to an early lead when senior Taylor Hollifield walk, followed by a single from junior Allen Staton to put runners on first and second. Sophomore Tyler Mitchell drove in his 9th RBI of the season with a double to put the Crusaders ahead 1-0 after an inning of play.
However, Erskine’s offense came alive in the 4th inning by scoring five runs on just three hits followed by three runs on four hits for an 8-1 lead heading into the 6th inning.
Hollifield and Staton once again put runners on first and second, this time on back-to-back singles as Mitchell cleared the bases with a three-run home run, his 6th of the season, to cut the Erskine lead to just four runs. The Flying Fleet added one run in the 6th and another in the 8th for the 10-4 victory at home.
Sophomore Ben Kramm was on the mound for his third start of the season, allowing five runs on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 3 2/3 innings on the mound. Freshman Zach Smith pitched the final 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits with a strikeout.
Mitchell led the offense finishing 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, a run scored and four RBI, while Staton was also 2-for-4 with a run scored. Hollifield reached base three times in the game, finishing 1-for-2 with a run scored and two walks, as junior Josh Sealey and sophomore Drew Lipscomb each recorded a hit in the contest.
The Crusaders (7-31, 2-14 Conference Carolinas) and Erskine will square off in a double header tomorrow beginning at Noon in Due West.
