Tigerville, SC – In the first game of a weekend series with the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey, North Greenville baseball dropped an 8-3 decision on Friday afternoon at Ashmore Field.
Belmont struck first with a run in the 4th and two more in the 5th to build the early 3-0 lead before North Greenville would get on the scoreboard.
However, in the bottom of the 5th inning North Greenville loaded the bases and scored its first run when sophomore Jessep Polk was it by a pitch to bring a run across the plate. NGU even the score at 3-3 in the 6th inning on back-to-back RBIs from sophomore Foley George and Wheeler Smith on groundouts.
Over the final three innings of play Belmont Abbey would take advantage of three errors by the North Greenville to score five runs on just four hits to claim the 8-3 victory.
Senior Ryan Woodring was hit with the loss after pitching 7 1/3 innings on the mound, allowing five runs (one earned) on nine hits with six strikeouts.
Freshman Eric Hertel allowed one unearned run on one hit in just 2/3 of an inning, while fellow freshman Patrick Busscher pitched one inning of relief, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits.
Junior Josh Sealey led the offense for North Greenville finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored as senior Taylor Hollifield was also 2-for-4 in the game. George and Smith each recorded 1-for-4 performances with an RBI each, while Polk was 2-for-3 with an RBI of his own.
North Greenville (7-27, 2-11 Conference Carolinas) and Belmont Abbey will square off in a double header tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. in Tigerville.
