Crusaders Swept By Saints
Tigerville, SC – The Saints of Limestone College used seven runs over the first three innings of play to build an insurmountable lead and complete the sweep of North Greenville Univesity 8-5 on Monday afternoon at Ashmore field.
Limestone struck early and often, scoring two runs on two hits in the top of the 2nd inning and driving in five more runs on four hits in the 3rd to gain a 7-0 edge in the game’s opening frames.
The Crusaders got on the board in the 4th inning, as North Greenville loaded the bases and took advantage of back-to-back errors by the Limestone defense to cut into the lead.
The Saints were also able to take advantage of a fielding error by the Crusaders to score their final run in the 6th inning before a sacrifice fly from sophomore Drew Lipscomb and a two-run home run by sophomore Jessep Polk in the 7th inning made the score 8-5 in favor of Limestone.
North Greenville was able to get two runners on in the bottom of the 9th but Limestone shut the door and secured the three-run road victory.
Sophomore right-hander Ben Kramm suffered his second loss of the season after allowing seven runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts in just 2 2/3 inning of work.
Freshman Zach Smith turned in his second quality performance, pitching five innings of relief and allowing one unearned run on three hits, while fellow freshman Eric Hertel allowed just one hit with a strikeout in the final 1 1/3 innings on the mound.
Polk led the offense finishing 1-for-2 with a home run, a run scored, two RBI and three hit-by-pitches, while sophomore Foley George was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Taylor Hollifield turned in a 1-for-4 performance with an RBI as Lipscomb drove in a run and scored a run of his own while drawing two walks.
North Greenville (6-25, 2-10 Conference Carolinas) will travel to Mars Hill University tomorrow for a 3 p.m. matchup with the Lions in Mars Hill, NC.
