Tigerville, SC – Amid the heavy rain and wind conditions the North Greenville baseball team suffered two losses to the Saints of Limestone College 17-5 and 4-1 in a double header Saturday night at Ashmore Field.
In game one, Limestone used 20 hits, including 11 extra base hits, to earn a 12-run victory.
The Saints started the game off with two runs on two hits in the top of the 2nd inning before an RBI double from senior Taylor Hollifield made the score 2-1 in favor of Limestone after two innings of play.
Limestone added three runs in the 3rd as sophomore Jessep Polk drove in a run with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame as the Saints held onto a 5-2 lead until an RBI triple from sophomoreTyler Mitchell and an RBI by fellow sophomore Foley George cut into the Saint lead after five innings.
In the 6th inning, Limestone put up four runs on three hits before a rain delay stopped play for almost an hour. After the delay the Saints scored six more runs on seven hits in the 7th inning to build a 15-4 lead.
George drove in his second RBI of the game in the 7th, while the Saints added on two more runs in the top of the 9th to make the final score 17-5 in game one.
Senior Ryan Woodring suffered the loss after allowing nine runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings of work.
Junior Stewart Hunt allowed four runs on four hits in just 1/3 of an inning, while freshman Patrick Busscher pitched one inning of relief, allowing two runs on three hits. Sophomore Cuyler McAuliffe finished the game allowing two runs (none earned) on two hits with two strikeouts in two innings on the mound.
Junior Josh Sealey finished game one 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while George was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sophomore Drew Lipscomb was also 2-for-3 with a run scored as Mitchell finished 2-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI.
Game two began with what looked like a pitcher’s duel as the two teams combined for just two hit through the first two and a half innings of play.
The Crusaders gained the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd as Hollifield belted a solo home run over the left field fence before the Saints went ahead 2-1 on a two run home run in the 4th inning.
Limestone added two insurance runs in the top of the 7th to secure the 4-1 victory on the road.
Freshman right-hander Shane Bishop was hit with the loss after pitching five innings, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts, while fellow freshman Eric Hertel allowed two runs on two hits with three strikeouts in two innings of relief.
Hollifield led the offense finishing 1-for-3 with a home run, a run scored and an RBI as freshman Zac Davis finished 1-for-3 in the contest.
North Greenville (6-24, 2-9 Conference Carolinas) and Limestone will finish their three-game series on Monday, March 31 at 3:30 pm in Tigerville.
