Crusaders Drop Non-Conference Contest To Brevard

Brevard, NC – In a rematch with the Tornados of Brevard College, the Crusaders dropped an 8-3 decision on the road on Tuesday afternoon.

North Greenville jumped ahead early with an RBI double from sophomore Tyler Mitchell in the first inning before Brevard scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame to lead 5-1 after a full inning on the diamond.

The Tornados put up three more runs on two hits in the 4th when a costly error in the field by North Greenville allowed Brevard to extend its lead to 8-1 after four full innings.

The Crusader offense came alive in the 9th as senior Taylor Hollifield led off the inning with a walk. After a strikeout, sophomore Connor Edwards drew a walk of his own followed by freshman Colton Grant who reached on a fielder’s choice in his first career at bat.

With two runners on and two outs, freshman Matt Cooper doubled down the right field line to drive in two runs, making the score 8-3 in favor of Brevard. The rally was too little, too late as a strikeout ended the game and secured the victory for the Tornados at home.

Freshman Zach Smith struggled on the mound and was hit with the loss, allowing five runs on four hits in just one inning of work.

Fellow freshman Shane Bishop threw four innings of relief, allowing three unearned runs on four hits with two strikeouts, while junior Stewart Hunt finished the game allowing just three hits with two strikeouts in three innings of relief.

Mitchell led the offense, finishing 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, while Cooper was 1-for-5 with a double and two RBI of his own.

The Crusaders (4-14, 1-2 Conference Carolinas) will host Georgia College on Thursday, March 13 at 3:30 pm in Tigerville.
