Crusader Baseball Suffers Defeat In Final Inning

Tigerville, SC – After almost a week away from the field, the North Greenville University baseball team lost a 5-4 contest to the Mountain Lions of Young Harris College on Tuesday at Ashmore Field.

Young Harris went ahead by a run in the top of the 1st inning, scoring on a wild pitch before the Crusaders quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single from junior Allen Staton.

Staton put the Crusaders ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the 3rd inning with a two-RBI single. Young Harris scored one more run in the top of the 4th on a solo home run from designated hitter Zach Wall over the left field fence.

The Crusaders used an unearned run in the bottom of the 4th when senior Taylor Hollifield scored on a pass ball before Young Harris tied the game at 4-4 on a two-run home run from Wall, his second of the game.

The Mountain Lions scored the go-ahead in the top of the 9th, scoring a run from third after Young Harris reached on a fielder’s choice. The Crusader offense went down 1-2-3 in the final inning, taking the one-run loss at home.

North Greenville used eight pitchers in the game begging with freshman Zach Smith who threw two innings on the mound, allowing one run on one hits with a strikeouts, before fellow freshman Shane Bishop came in for one inning of relief, allowing just one hit with a strikeout.

Junior Stewart Hunt allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts in one inning of work, while sophomore Ben Kramm pitched a perfect 5th inning. Freshman left-hander Chase Day followed with hitless 6th inning on the mound, while Eric Hertel faced just two batters in the 7th without recording an out.

Freshman Patrick Busscher recorded a strikeout in a perfect 7th inning of work as freshman Matt Eubanks took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in the final two innings of play.

Staton led the offense, going 2-for-5 from the plate with three RBI and a stolen base, while fellow junior Stephen Cantrell was 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Sophomore Tyler Mitchell was 1-for-4 with a double as Hollifield and freshman Matt Cooper were also 1-for-4 in the game.

North Greenville (3-11, 0-0 Conference Carolinas) will begin conference play on Friday, March 7 when they travel to Wilson, NC for a three-game series with Barton College. Game one against the Bulldogs is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start.
