Tigerville, SC – The Crusader baseball win streak came to an end with an 8-4 loss at the hands of Lenoir Rhyne University on Wednesday afternoon.
North Greenville struck first on the scoreboard with two runs in the 1st inning on an RBI double from junior Allen Staton and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Foley George to claim the early lead.
Lenoir Rhyne scored their first run in the 4th inning on back-to-back errors by the Crusader defense before North Greenville went ahead 3-1 on a solo home run from sophomore Tyler Mitchell in the bottom of the 5th inning.
From there the Bears used a five run 6th inning followed by single runs in the 7th and 9th innings to earn a lead they would never relinquish. Senior Taylor Hollifield hit his first home run in the bottom of the 9th but the Crusader offense fell just short in the final frame.
Freshman Zach Smith suffered the loss in his first career start, pitching 5 1/3 innings while allowing six runs on six hits with a strikeout.
Fellow freshman Matt Eubanks pitched 1 2/3 innings on the mound, allowing one unearned run on five hits, while sophomore Ben Kramm allowed one hit with two strikeouts in an inning of work. Left-hander Chase Day finished the game pitching one inning of relief, allowing one run on one hit.
Mitchell finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with his 4th home run of the season, an RBI and a run scored, while Staton was 2-or-5 with a double and an RBI.
The Crusaders (3-9, 0-0 Conference Carolinas) will continue non-conference play with a road game against South Atlantic Conference member Anderson University tomorrow, Feb. 27 in Anderson, SC at 3 p.m.
