Toccoa Falls, GA – The Crusader baseball team suffered its seventh straight loss, dropping a 12-2 decision at the hands of the 2013 NCCAA National Champion Eagles of Toccoa Falls College on Thursday night.
Toccoa Falls scored four runs over the first three innings of play to build an early lead it would never relinquish. Five more runs in the 6th and 7th innings combined put the Eagles ahead 9-0 before the Crusaders would get on the scoreboard.
In the 8th inning of play, the Crusaders scored twice, highlighted by an RBI single from junior Josh Sealey to gain their first runs of the game before three runs by Toccoa Falls in the bottom of the inning sealed the 10-run victory for the Eagles at home.
Junior right-hander Kelvin Minnig took the loss after pitching five innings on the mound, allowing seven runs on eight hits, striking out two batters.
Freshman Eric Hertel came on in relief to pitch two innings, allowing two runs on just one hit with a strikeout, while Ryan Rich allowed three runs on four hits without recording an out. Freshman Chase Day pitched one no-hit inning of relief to end the game.
Utility player Jessep Polk led the Crusaders from the plate, finishing 2-for-3, with two walks, threes stolen bases and a run scored, while Sealey was 1-for-1 with an RBI.
The Crusaders (1-7, 0-0 Conference Carolinas) will host both Point University and Toccoa Falls College on Saturday afternoon. The first game of the day against Point is scheduled for Noon, while the second game against Toccoa Falls is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Ashmore Field in Tigerville.
