Crusaders Drop Non Conference Tilt With Brevard
Brevard, NC – In a non-conference matchup with the Tornados of Brevard College, the North Greenville University baseball dropped a 10-4 decision on the road.
North Greenville got into trouble early as the Tornados scored three runs on four hits to gain an early 3-0 lead, before the Crusaders got on the scoreboard with an RBI single from Tyler Mitchell to make the score 3-1 after four innings of play.
Brevard tacked on two runs in the fifth, four runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth to build a 10-1 lead heading into the ninth and final inning.
Mitchell and Foley George began the ninth inning with back-to-back walks before Adam Taylor walked to load the bases. Taylor Hollifield followed with an RBI single to keep the Crusader rally alive. A two-RBI single by Allen Staton brought North Greenville within six but the Crusaders were unable to keep the inning alive, leading to the 10-4 defeat.
Senior Andrew Lawrence was hit with the loss after allowing five runs on six hits, recording three strikeouts. Aaron Gates allowed three runs (two earned) in just 1/3 of an inning, while Griffin
Spires pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing just one run on two hits, striking out two batters. Staton finished the final inning, allowing one run on one hit and striking out two in the game.
Lawrence shined at the plate, finishing the day 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Hollifield was 3-for-5 in the game with an RBI. Mitchell turned in a 2-for-4 performance with a run scored and an RBI as Frank Polino also finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Crusaders (14-25, 5-13 in Conference Carolinas) will begin a crucial conference series on Friday, April 12 as they host Barton College at 3:30 p.m. in Tigerville.
