Mason, Oh. – The North Greenville baseball team began its chase of a second straight national title game on Wednesday with 7-1 win over third seed Mt. Vernon Nazarene in the opening game of the 2011 NCCAA World Series.
The Crusaders sprinted out of the games in the top of the first inning with two runs on two hits. Brian Giles led the inning off with a walk and found his way to second on a stolen base. Adam Taylor picked up the first RBI of the tournament for NGU with a single, scoring Giles. Taylor advanced to second on the throw home and would later score on a Derek Fulmer single.
The two run lead would be enough for 2011 pitcher of the year Drew Provence. Provence pitched six innings allowing one run on six hits while racking up six strikeouts. Justin Turner added one out of relief work and Nate Richards closed the game with a strikeout.
The Crusader offense stayed hot throughout the game adding three runs in third inning and another two in the fourth. Senior captain Tyler Callicutt continued his post season success going 2-4 with an RBI. Adam Taylor was 3-4 from the plate with an RBI and a run scored and Anthony Foulk was 2-4 from the plate with a team leading three RBI’s.
The North Greenville is now 1-0 in the pool play format and 34-15 overall. The Crusaders will play a double header tomorrow starting at 10am against Judson. NGU’s second game will be at 4:30 against The Masters School.
