TIgerville, S.C.— The North Greenville Crusaders picked up a game one win today after beating the Bluefield College Rams 10-3 in a rematch of the 2010 NCCAA World Series Championship game.
The Crusaders took an early 1 run lead in the second inning after Tyler Callicutt scored on an errant throw by the Bluefield third baseman. Bluefield wasted little time answering the challenge however taking the lead with a two run third. NGU tied the game in the game at two in the fourth inning after William Gladden scored on a passed ball. The Crusaders took a commanding 9-2 lead in the fifth inning scoring seven runs on six hits. North Greenville would add a 10th run in the bottom half of the eighth inning to pad the score.
The Crusader offense was aided by a masterful performance from staff ace Drew Provenc. Provence pitched 8 innings giving up just two runs on five hits while tallying five strikeouts. Matthew Benjamin took over in the 9th inning allowing one run on two hits. Benjamin also recorded a strikeout.
Offensively Tyler Callicutt led the way for NGU going 3-4 from the plate with an RBI. Callicutt also scored three times. Freshman Taylor Hollifield also had a productive day at the dish going 2-3 with two RBI’s and a run scored. The Crusaders and Rams will wrap up their three game set tomorrow with a double header starting at noon.
