Tigerville, S.C.—The North Greenville Baseball team picked up a convincing 11-1 win over South Atlantic Conference member Newberry College Friday afternoon at Ashmore Field.
The Crusaders picked up 11 runs on 13 hits including a fifth inning grand slam from first baseman Tyler Callicutt. The homerun from the senior first baseman was the first of the season for the NGU baseball team.
The Crusaders and Wolves traded scoreless innings until the bottom of the third when NGU picked up three runs on four hits, including a two run double off the bat of sophomore Andrew Lawrence. Newberry cut into the NGU lead in the top half of the fourth with a homerun, but starter Drew Provence held the Wolves in check for the remaining five innings.
The crusaders padded their lead scoring runs in the fifth (5), sixth (2), and Eighth (1), innings. Defensively, Drew Provence tallied nine strike outs in seven innings of work. Provence allowed one run on five hits with no walks. Andrew Lawrence came in in relief in the top of the 8th inning striking out two, and walking one. Lawrence allowed one hit. Offensively, Tyler
Callicutt led the attack going 2-4 from the plate scoring two runs and picking up five RBI’s. Adam Taylor and Andrew Lawrence were both 2-4 on the day while Derek Fulmer was 2-5. Andrew Lawrence also accounted for two RBI’s. The Crusaders and Wolves will wrap up the weekend series tomorrow afternoon with a double header in Newberry. The first pitch is scheduled for 1pm.
