The Brevard Tornados pounded 16 hits and had 13 RBI’s to take game one of a doubleheader with North Greenville 13-4, and then held off a last inning rally by the Crusaders to sweep the series with a 7-6 win in game two Saturday afternoon at Ashmore Field in Tigerville.
The Tornados blew the game open with six runs in the first inning and then added five more in the 5th. Randy Stegall went 2-4 with one RBI and a double; Jacob Goetze and Cory Hinton were both 2-3 with an RBI. NGU had 12 hits in game one but could not close the big margin opened by Brevard.
In game two, the teams battled to a 4-4 tie heading to the top of the sixth inning. The Tornados responded with three runs, all unearned, as NGU committed two errors in the frame. However, the Crusaders rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth on Dayton Lupton’s two run homer. Lupton, who accounted for four of NGU’s six runs, also ripped a two RBI double in the fourth inning.
NGU had the tying run on second base in the bottom of the seventh in the presence of Chris Harbit, but Dylan Fulk bounced into a fielder’s choice to end the game. Lupton was 2-4 for NGU, and Randy Stegall was 2-3 with two RBI’s and two runs scored. Tanner Yarboro pitched a solid four innings, but Drew Provence was touched for the Brevard rally in the sixth and took the loss.
North Greenville will travel to Tusculum in Tennessee Tuesday, April 14 for a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader in its next action.
