Tigerville, S.C.- The North Greenville University baseball team returned to the diamond today with a double header with the Southern Wesleyan University Warriors. The first game of the day would have a rough start as the Crusaders gave up 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning.
NGU would be put out in order in the bottom of the first but would finally put a run on the board in the bottom of the second off of an RBI single by Dayton Lupton who went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored on the day.
There would be no scoring again until the 5th inning when SWU scored 1 run.
NGU would answer in the bottom of the 5th with a run of its own. The Crusaders would go on to score 2 runs in the 6th and one run in the bottom of 7th to send the game into extra innings. Despite the clutch hitting of the Crusaders the Warriors would take game 1 in 9 innings with a final score of 7 to 6.
Offensively, the Crusaders were led by Corey Hinton who went 2-3 with a run scored, Derek Fulmer who went 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI’s and David Frazier who went 2 for 5.
The pitchers for the Crusaders were Devin Vance who pitched 6 innings giving up 5 runs on 5 hits and Tanner Yarboro who pitched 3 innings and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits.
With the fist game of the day in the books the Crusaders hoped to bounce back with a win. NGU would start the game off on the right foot in the bottom of the first scoring 1 run on 2 hits. The team would go on to post 2 more runs in the 3rd and 1 in the bottom of the 5th to end the scoring for both teams in the second game. Rand Stegall went 3 for 3 and scored two runs for the Crusaders.
Other offensive leaders in game 2 were Derek Fulmer who went 2 for 2 with 2 RBI’s, Tyler Callicutt who went 1 for 2, and David Frazier who went 1 for 2 scoring 2 runs. Chad Drosieko would go the distance on the mound for NGU going 7 innings giving up 2 runs off of 5 hits. The Crusaders would improve their record to 5 and 23 with the game 2 win.
