A day after posting their first win of the 2009 season the Crusaders would take the field for yet another Saturday double header to finish off a 3 game series with the Southern Wesleyan Warriors.
Game 1 would go scoreless until the 3rd inning when Derek Fulmer would connect and put the Crusaders on the board with a two run home run scoring Randy Stegall who reached on a walk the previous at bat.
Derek Fulmer would go 3-4 with 3 RBI’s in the first game. Dayton Lupton would go 1-3 with an RBI and Corey Hinton would also contribute with an RBI.
The starting pitcher for the Crusaders in the first contest of the day would be Devin Vance. Vance pitched 3 innings and would give up 7 runs on 5 hits. Vance’s relief pitcher Tanner Yarboro pitched 2 and 2 thirds innings giving up 2 earned runs off of two hits. In all the Crusader pitching staff would give up 9 runs off of 7 hits. The Crusaders would drop game 1 of the double header 9-5.
The Team would look to bounce back during the second game of the day.
Michael Benjamin would take the mound for the Crusaders and would have a shakey start giving up 2 runs on 1 hit in the bottom of the first inning. The Crusaders would get on the board in the 2nd inning when Chad Drosieko would score on a single from Devin Vance.
The Warriors would score two more runs in the 4th inning.
On the day Michael Benjamin would give up 4 runs on 5 hits and walked one runner. Pitching in relief for the Crusaders would pitch 3 inning and hold the Warriors scoreless on two hits. The Warriors pitching staff would hold the Crusaders to 1 run until the 6th inning when the Crusaders would score 3 runs off of 5 hits. The scoring would not stop in the 6th as the Crusaders would carry the offensive momentum into the 7th inning. The Crusaders would score 3 runs on 2 hits in the 7th taking the lead and the game 7 – 4.
The leaders for the Crusaders in the second game would be Corey Hinton who went 1 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored, Chad Drosieko went 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, Devin Vance who was 1 for 3 with an RBI and David Frazier who was 2 for 2 and scored 2 runs. Markus Duckworth would add an RBI as well. The Crusader pitching staff would give up 4 runs off of 7 hits. “The team is continuing to play hard” says Coach Travis Henson “we battled all day and split the double header and I’m proud of our guys.” With two wins in two days the crusaders improve their overall record to 2-11. The next game for the Crusader baseball team is on February 24th at 2 o’clock pm against Mars Hill College.
