BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb pounded out 15 hits, including three home runs and a pair of grand slams to beat North Greenville, 17-3, Tuesday afternoon.
Jeremiah Lokken cleared the bases with a shot launched over the right field wall in the bottom of the fourth to give Gardner-Webb (5-8) a 7-1 lead, and Bubbie Spake capped a six-run fifth inning with a towering grand slam to right center – and opposite field job that made the score 13-1 in favor of the Diamond ‘Dogs.
Freshman Kyle Paeplow came off the bench and smashed a two-run bomb to right center that sparked a four-run burst in the seventh for the final margin. The home run was the first of Paeplow’s career – who also came in to hurl a perfect eighth inning on the mound.
Five Bulldog pitchers combined to allow just six hits and two earned runs over nine innings, with junior Michael Lewis (1-0) picking up the win with 2.2 innings of one-hit relief (no runs allowed).
Spake (3-for-4, HR, 4 RBI), O.J. McFarland (2-for-4, two 2B), Brock Miller (2-for-3) and Justin Loyd (2-for-3) paced Gardner-Webb’s offense – with Lokken providing a career-best six RBI on the afternoon. A total of 10 different Bulldogs collected at least one hit in the game.
Grayson Smith (1-3) took the loss for North Greenville, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits in 4.0 innings of work. Six different Crusaders collected one hit apiece for the visitors.
