TIGERVILLE, SC--It took extra innings, but North Greenville University defeated Chowan University twice Saturday. The Crusaders took the first game 3-2 in nine innings (game was scheduled for seven innings) and won game two 8-7 on a Curt Marshall two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning. North Greenville improves to 15-23 on the season.
GAME ONE: NGU 3 CU 2
Grayson Smith pitched a complete game, striking out two batters and giving up nine hits in the win. Brandon Hammlet took the loss for Chowan.
Marshall led the way for the Crusaders, batting 4 for 4 wiht an RBI and two runs scored. Corey Hinton and Tyler Callicutt each added one hit and one RBI, while Mike Reis had one hit and scored a run.
Justin Hollingsworth and Matt Bullock each had one hit and an RBI to lead the Hawks.
NGU spread out its runs, scoring one in each of the first, seventh, and ninth innings. Chowan scored both its runs in the sixth inning.
GAME TWO: NGU 8 CU 7
Curt Marshall hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Crusaders in dramatic fashion. North Greenville entered the inning down by one run. Chris Tate singled with one out, then stole second base. Marshall then jacked a home run to left center field to end the game. It was the second home run of the day for Marshall. He led off the seventh inning with a home run.
Marshall ended up 2 for 3 for the game with 3 RBI and two runs scored.
Rick Broadway batted 2 for 2 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Reis and Tate each had two hits as well.
Bullock and Hollingsworth led the Hawks. Bullock went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Hollingsworth batted 1 for 3 with three RBI.
Tommy Okano picked up the win for the Crusaders, while Steven Brown took the loss for Chowan.
