Crusaders fall at #1 GCSU

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia Ė The top-ranked Georgia College & State University baseball team had to put on its rally caps twice in a non-conference doubleheader sweep over North Greenville College Tuesday afternoon at John Kurtz Field. GCSU (18-2) won the first game 6-2 thanks in-part to a three-run triple from Hans Stancil, and the Bobcats won the second game 4-3 on Brandon Andersonís walk-off RBI single to extend their winning streak to 13 games.

In game one North Greenville (6-14) jumped on GCSU starter Jimmy Finley (1-0) with a pair of runs in the first inning as Chris Tate and Dustin Pace delivered run-scoring singles. Finley, a senior who was making his first career start, settled down and would retire 14 straight during the game to allow the Bobcats to stay in it. GCSU finally dented the scoreboard in the third inning on an RBI single from Rich Janofsky. The Bobcats would take the lead in the sixth inning as Stancil stepped in with the bases loaded and quickly cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line to put GCSU up 4-2. He would later score on Andersonís ground out. The Bobcats added an insurance run in the sixth on Giuseppe Rivasí RBI ground out for the final 6-2 margin.

Finley picked up the win on the mound after allowing two runs on eight hits in eight complete innings with three strikeouts. Seth Montgomery (0-3) took the loss for the Crusaders after allowing six runs on 15 hits in eight complete innings. Janofsky went 3-for-3 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored to lead the Bobcats at the plate. Justin Mills went 3-for-5, while Nathan Martin went 2-for-3 for GCSU. Tate and Matt Britt went 2-for-4 to lead North Greenville.

The second game was a seven inning affair which was scoreless until the sixth inning when North Greenville took advantage of three GCSU errors to play three unearned runs. The Bobcats would rally in the bottom of the frame as Giuseppe Rivas clubbed a pinch-hit three-run home run to left field to knot the game at 3-all.

Lee Helms led off the bottom of the seventh for the Bobcats with a triple down the right field line, and Anderson stepped in to deliver the game-winning single to left to give the Bobcats the 4-3 victory.

Michael Newman (6-0) picked up the win in relief after allowing only two hits with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Wes Sorrells did not factor in the decision, but pitched well in his first start, allowing three unearned runs on four hits with eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Brett Hamilton (0-2) took the loss for the Crusaders after allowing four runs, only one earned, on seven hits in six-plus innings.

Anderson went 2-for-2, while Casey Cullen went 2-for-3 to lead GCSU at the plate. Britt went 2-for-4, while Pace went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead North Greenville.

The Bobcats travel to Aiken, SC, for a three game Peach Belt Conference series with #13 USC Aiken Friday and Saturday.
