MARS HILL, NC - MHC split a baseball double-header with North Greenville University this afternoon at Henderson Field. The Lions are now 7-10 overall while the Crusaders took their season record to 6-12.
Game 1: NGU 6, MHC 1
NGU took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Chris Tate (Augusta, GA) singled up the middle to plate Mike Ries (Cleveland, OH). Reis reached on a double earlier in the inning.
The Crusaders then scored five runs in the sixth inning on four hits and two Lion errors. Rick Broadway (Sumter, SC) highlighted the inning with a three-run homerun to left-center.
MHC scored one run in the seventh inning when Marc Wassum (Winter Park, FL) and Matt Carter (Sunrise, FL) traded places hitting back-to-back doubles to start the inning.
Broadway led NGU with the three-RBI homerun. Reis and Tate each had two hits for the Crusaders. Devin Vance (Taylors, SC) threw a complete game scattering four hits to pick up the win (3-1) on the mound for NGU.
Wassum and Carter each went 1-for-3 for the Lions. Cody Branton (Burnsville, NC) took the loss (1-1) on the mound for MHC throwing five innings.
Game 2: MHC 9, NGU 6
NGU jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning when Tate doubled to center field to drive in Matt Britt (Grayson, GA). The Lions then exploded for four runs in the second inning on three hits and one error. Jason Yelton (Burnsville, NC) and Billy Britt (Asheville, NC) each had an RBI in the inning.
NGU trimmed the Lions advantage to 4-2 in the top of the fifth inning when Britt scored on a sacrifice fly. The Lions answered scoring three runs in the bottom half of the fifth on three hits and another Crusader error to increase their lead to 7-2.
MHC added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning before NGU made a run at the Lions in the top of the seventh. The Crusaders plated four runs and put two runners on base with one out before Adam Atkinson (Weaverville, NC) got Mark Bordeaux (Sumter, SC) to ground into a double-play that ended the contest.
Chris Lambert (Brevard, NC) led MHC at the plate going 4-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored and a double. Yelton was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a double. Charlie Harrison (Granite Falls, NC) picked up the win (2-1) on the hill in relief throwing four innings allowing just a single run.
Broadway and Eric Loy (Maryville, TN) led NGU with two hits and two RBI apiece. Dylan Davidson (Landrum, SC) took the loss (2-4) for NGU throwing five innings allowing seven runs.
MHC will begin SAC play this weekend when they host Lenoir-Rhyne College in a three-game series. The teams will meet for a double-header at 12 p.m. on Saturday and then play a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
