Columbia, SC – Members of the North Greenville University football and cheerleading squads were recognized by the South Carolina state legislature today for winning the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association’s Victory Bowl and the Christian Cheerleaders of America Championship during the 2010-2011 academic year.
The state Senate issued an official resolution recognizing and congratulating NGU’s student-athletes on the floor of the Senate in the Statehouse. Also attending the ceremony were NGU President Dr. Jimmy Epting, Director of the NGU Crusader Club Wayne Landrith, and Micah Sepko, Assistant Athletic Director.
NGU’s football team defeated Campbellsville University of Kentucky 42-16 in the NCCAA title game in November last year and finished 9-3 with an eight-game winning streak still intact. Coach Jamey Chadwell’s team members who represented the Crusaders in Columbia included William Korn, Johnathon Moore, Carl Dukes, Troy Jones, Nathan Batchelor, Mark Smith, AJ Jones, Jonathan White, James Thurn, Jonah Deuerling, and Michael Klein.
The cheerleading squad, under the direction of Leslie DeBruyn, was named National Champions in the College Co-Ed Division for the competition sponsored by the Christian Cheerleaders of America March 5 in Concord, NC. The Crusader cheerleaders, besides their overall national title, won seven trophies, five medals and two banners. Members of the squad who were recognized in Columbia included Cassie Blanton, Lindsey Austin, Austin Barrett, Shayna Wooten, and Sara Batson.
